Btw there’s a good recent article by Drew Tetz that goes into some detail about this technique: http://makezine.com/projects/animated-records-phenakistoscopes/ His work at 30fps i.e. with a smartphone. Live, we shoot ours with a DV cam at 25fps. Viewing under a strobe also works. Loads of stuff here too: http://phonotropia.blogspot.co.uk/
